Leave It Better

Wrecords By Monkey

The remnants of a different age of music, ubiquitous black vinyl records, are strewn across landfills everywhere.

They sit there and do nothing. It takes about 1,000 years until a vinyl record decomposes.

Solution: Reuse the records to make art.

A couple of summers ago, myself and producer Linda Thach, had the opportunity to go to Wrecords By Monkey's studio in Brooklyn and witness the small company in action.

Monkey is an extremely outgoing, friendly, larger-than-life character, who runs the business end of things. Brian is reserved and quiet, chooses his words and his designs with grace and precision. Check out some of Brian's bracelet designs:

Together, they're the best-friend dynamo team that makes up a surviving, growing, thriving business despite the fact that they're selling novelty items in the midst of the biggest economic slump in close to a century.

It was a great pleasure to meet Monkey and Brian, and they were cool enough to give us some bracelets, too, which make great birthday and Valentine's Day gifts for the eco-aware hubby.

These are really nice bracelets and charms. I'm sure they've probably inspired others to reuse items for art.
